NZ SKI FIELD INFORMATION
NORTH ISLAND
Manganui
This is the only ski area in the
Taranaki region. It offers 1 T bar and 3 rope tows. A 20 minute
walk from the carpark brings you to a particularly diverse field with some
very challenging terrain on the upper mountain. Highest point 1680
metres. Location 22 Km from Stratford.
Tukino
Located on the eastern face of Mt
Ruapehu. It is one of NZ smallest club fields excellent for beginners
with almost 65% of the mountain perfect for the beginner. Great for
family skiing and ski-champ training. Snowboarders will find the
powder runs brilliant. Highest point 1910 metres. Location
28 Km from Waiouru.
Turoa
Turoa skifield has the largest vertical
drop in Australasia and also offers the highest point. It has eleven
major lifts so you are able to ski or snowboard the 400 hectares on offer.
Their longest run is 4 Km. Turoa is renown for having long seasons
June-November. Highest point 2322 metres. Location 20
Km from Ohakune.
Whakapapa
This is NZ largest developed ski
and with 550 hectares of skiable terrain, situated on the north-western
face of Mt Ruapehu. Also known as the Magic Mountain. Whakapapa
offers 30 groomed trails with plenty of off-pisted area for the more adventurous.
Highest point 2300 metres. Location 21 Km from National Park.
SOUTH ISLAND
Awakino
The skiing potential here is great.
Virtually unknown outside of Otago or South Canterbury but
full of surprises for those that make it this far down the Waitaki valley.
Slopes vary from steep, advanced to intermediate with a small beginners
area. 4WD access to the main field. Highest point 1737 metres.
Location 11 Km from Kurow.
Broken River
On leaving SH73 you drive up through
a native beech forest to the carpark where it takes a short 15-25 min walk
before you reach the skifield. This is the perfect warm up for your
days skiing. Night skiing is available which makes the on-field accommodation
perfect for a week end away. Highest point 1783 metres. Location
121 Km from Christchurch
Cardrona
Wide open trails, well groomed slopes
and plunging valleys with terrain to suit all abilities. Cardrona
is a popular commercial field with excellent natural snow. It has
a reputation as a family mountain but is also interesting for snowboarders
with 4 half pipes and an awesome terrain park. Highest point 1894
metres. Location 25 Km from Wanaka, 57 Km from Queenstown.
Coronet Peak
This is the oldest and most developed
skifield in the region. The field is wide and sunny with a variety
of runs the longest called the M1 2.4 Km long. Coronet Peak has 3
chair lifts (1 being a high speed quad) 1 t-bar, 2 platters & 2 learners.
The two half pipes are maintained to peak standard by a half pipe shaper
designed in NZ for NZ. Highest 1650 metres. Location 18 Km
Queenstown.
Craigieburn
Criagieburn is best suited to intermediate
and advanced skiers & boarders, beginners beware. Three
high capacity rope tows service the 500m vertical drop. This mountain
is steep, deep and cheap with wide open powder bowls and steep narrow chutes.
A cosy alpine lodge is available where there is great food and friendly
people. Highest point 1811 metres. Location 110 Km from Christchurch.
Fox Peak
A unique club field with the facilities
and terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Located in
the Two Thumb range in central South Canterbury. Fox Peak has easy access
and inexpensive lift tickets. Serviced by 4 rope tows. Highest
point 1850 metre. Location 29 Km from Farlie, 111Km from Christchurch.
Hanmer Springs Ski Area
Formerly Amuri Ski Area this mountains
offers you plenty of space serviced by 1 poma and 2 rope tows.
It has a learners area, good intermediate skiing on groomed trails,
off- piste challenges for the more advanced with both natural and groomed
pipe riding. Highest 1769 metres. Location 17 Km from Hanmer
Springs.
Harris
Mountain Heli Skiing
NZ ‘s largest heli-skiing /heli-boarding
service. HMH is based in Queenstown and Wanaka and offers daily trips
from their Classic 4 run day to the Maximum vertical 7 run plus day.
Mt Cheeseman
One of the oldest fields in the
Craigieburn established in 1923. Cheeseman offers a great choice
of groom and ungroomed slopes, which are serviced by 2 T-bars &
1 grip-tow. With terrain for all levels this is an excellent mountain
for families. Highest point 1844 metres. Location 112 Km from
Christchurch
Mt Dobson
Family owned and operated.
Mt Dobson is a commercial skifield offering a 3 Km wide basin of varied
terrain including wide expanses for beginners through to exciting powder
slopes for advanced skiers & boarders. Serviced by 1 T-bar, 2
platters & 1 learners tow. Highest point 2046 metres. Location
26 Km from Fairlie.
Mount Hutt
Canterbury’s most developed commercial
field. Mt Hutt is always the first to open with its extensive snowmaking
plus abundant national snowfalls, it can offer a long and enjoyable
season. This mountain is serviced by 1 quad, 1 triple, and 3 T-bars,
2 platters & 3 grip tows. Breathtaking views of the Canterbury
plains and the Southern Alps. Highest point 2075 metres. Location
26 Km from Methven, 118 Km from Christchurch.
Mount Hutt Heli Ski
Mount Hutt heli ski operates from
the Mount Hutt Ski Area carpark, and offers skiers /boarders options ranging
from single runs to half and full day heli-skiing. This certainly
offers skiers/boarders at Mt Hutt who’ve had enough of the queues time
out.
Mt Lyford
This area is considered NZ’s first
true alpine development. The large field is serviced by 2 pomas,
2 platters & 1 advanced rope tow. What ever your age, ability,
or idea of a great day in the snow is Doug and Jenny are here to help.
It is an excellent place to learn. Also offering a great natural
pipe and even tree skiing after fresh snow. Highest point 1750 metres.
Location 60Km from Kaikoura, 148 Km from Christchurch.
Mt Olympus
Mt Olympus is a club field set in
a wide, south facing basin of the Criagieburn Range. The snow
gets trapped and leaves light powder for you to make your tracks. This
mountain offers a variety of challenging runs on uncrowded slopes serviced
by 3 rope tows and 1 beginner tow. Highest point 1875 metres.
Location 66Km from Methven , 128 Km from Christchurch.
Mt Potts
Formerly Erewhon. The large
field consists of three basins, with terrain ranging from mellow
with lots of cliffs and chutes in-between. An average snowfall
of 11m per season. No lifts or tows only a cat or helicopter.
The cat holds 11 people and only 22 people will be allowed on the mountain
at one time. Highest point 2200 metres. Location 1 hour from
Methven.
Mt Robert
Mt Robert is unlike any other any
ski area with no queues, no hassles, great terrain....
Access is via a 2 hour scenic walk or a short helicopter ride.
On field accommodation makes week end stays even more attractive.
Highest point 1700 metres. Location 125 Km from Nelson
Ohau
Fresh powder, sunshine, uncrowded
slopes situated in the heart of the MacKenzie Country.
The fields main lift is the largest in NZ at 1033 metres long. Ohau’s
unique position means that it traps alot of snow, which other fields miss.
The skiing is great and can offer challengers for everyone. Highest
point 1925 metres. Location 52 Km from Twizel.
Porter Heights
This is the closest field to Christchurch.
Porter heights is a laid back and affordable mountain suitable for all
abilities. It is serviced by 3 T-bars, 1 platter & 1 grip-tow.
Grooming equipment turns the whole mountain into a terrain park of jumps
and tabletops for all those looking for air. Highest point 1980metres.
Location 96 Km from Christchurch.
Rainbow
One of NZ most scenic skifields
as it overlooks the Nelson Lakes National Park. It offers wide
and uncrowded slopes serviced by 1 double, 1 T-bar & 2 learners tows.
Rainbow has extensive snowmaking facilities. It can also offer some
of the local wines from it’s mountain cafe. Highest point 1758 metres.

Temple
Basin
Temple Basin is right in the heart
of the main devide of the southern Alps. This mountain often receives
more snow than other skifields and having north facing slopes means long
sunny days. Accessed by a 40-60min walking track from the main highway
(SH73). Variety of runs on uncrowded slopes and floodlight night
skiing makes this mountain an excellent choice. Highest point 1750
metres . Location 4 Km from Arthurs Pass, 157 Km from Christchurch.
The Remarkables
The Remarkables has something for
everyone- skiers, snowboarders & telemarkers. The 220 hectares
field is serviced by 2 quad chairs, 1 double, & 2 learner tows.
The terrain offers challengers for all levels of abilities with a high
emphasis on fun and excitement. Highest point 1957 metres.
Location 24 Km from Queenstown.
Treble Cone
Treble Cone boasts the only high-speed
detachable six-seater chair lift in the Southern Hemisphere. Offers
some exhilarating runs and spectacular views of Lake Wanaka and Mt Aspiring.
There are trails to suit all ages and all skill levels. The longest run
is Triple Treat 3.4 Km long, Highest point 2100 metres. Location
22 Km from Wanaka, 89 Km from Queenstown.
Waiorau Nordic
NZ ‘s only Nordic (cross country)
skifield. The field offers extensive groomed trails for skiers of
all abilities and experienced. Waiorau is a great place to have a
go at cross country or telemark skiing. Try something new this season.
Highest point 1980 metres. Location 25 Km Wanaka, 57 Km Queenstown. |
